On my recent visit to the Western Cape I spent two nights on the beautiful farm of Kunjani Wines which is owned and run by Paul Barth & Pia Watermeyer, a fabulous husband and wife team with a passion for wine, a passion for food and a passion for the beauty that lies in Stellenbosch and its beautiful surrounds.

Kunjani means ‘Hi, how are you?’ and the story behind the name is as sweet and touching as the story of behind the name of my favourite wine, Stolen Chicken.

Paul and Pia met at a wedding of a mutual friend – he could speak no English and she could speak no German, however between them they figured out a way to communicate and Paul travelled from Germany regularly to court Pia in South Africa, eventually settling here and opening Kunjani Wines, and learning to say Hello to many new experiences along the way.

Kunjani is truly a unique cross-continental blend of styles and trends, from the funky and unique furniture and decor, fun and uplifting range of wines, creative and innovative food choices from Chef Lamek, and the warm and welcome hospitality that exudes throughout not only the establishment but also the staff.

The property lies about 35 minutes drive from Cape Town city centre, and the views out over Tableview and the surrounding suburbs, with the ocean in the distance and the sparkling lights as night falls, peacefully enjoyed sipping on a few glasses of my favourite Stolen Chicken Rose, and soaking up the restorative country atmosphere.

The cottages, of course, are wine-inspired in their names, and we spent a very cosy two nights in ‘Merlot’ which served as our base for exploring the Stellenbosch Winelands and made an ideal home away from home.

The unit sports a double bed (can be swapped out for 2 twins if required), an ensuite bathroom, large lounge with comfy couches and a kitchen area (as well as the large patio mentioned earlier). Each unit has wall heaters, great in winter and of course aircon units – more than needed in summer, I would imagine!

Each unit is self-catering and includes all the necessary items for whipping up basic meals and even a Nescafe Dolce Gusto machine to get you, java lovers, off to a great morning start.

Breakfast is served in the restaurant and I treated myself on both mornings to my utter favourite, Eggs Benedict with countless cappuccino’s – there honestly can be nothing more satisfying than looking at a beautiful view, eating great food and enjoying good company.

From start to visit our weekend escape in the countryside was unforgettable and I must give a big thank you to Pia and her team for looking after our every need with expert attention. I cannot wait to return again!

Kunjani is currently running a 30% off accommodation special, which is valid until 28 February 2021 on all stays at Kunjani Villas. Discount is only valid when booked directly with Pia via info@kunjaniwines.co.za.
