De Krans Wines in Calitzdorp is without a doubt one of SA’s leading port producers. This statement was reaffirmed when, for the fourth year in a row its Cape Vintage Reserve was announced as the Overall Fortified Wine of the Year by revered UK authority Tim Atkin MW, in his highly anticipated annual review of South African wines. This year the 2018 vintage took the honour, as well as scoring an impressive 95 points.

In addition three of their wines scored 90 + points each. The deserving recipients were the De Krans Touriga Nacional 2018 (91 points), Garden Route Sauvignon Blanc 2020 (90 points) and the De Krans Tritonia Calitzdorp Blend 2017 (93 points). Earlier this month the Tritonia Red also secured a spot on the Top 10 list of the 2020 Prescient Red Blend Report.

Atkin, a British Master of Wine and accomplished wine commentator with extensive experience of South African wines, tasted a total of 1 328 South African wines for his 2020 Special Report.

The Cape Vintage Reserve Port is best described as a big wine full of ripe dark fruit notes of plum, mulberry and black currants. Well-rounded with smooth dark chocolate undertones and firm tannins are prominent in this port-style wine that would mature well over 30 years. Without a doubt, one to add to your collection, the De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2018 is available directly from the cellar at R325 per bottle, or select outlets nationwide.
