Located along the R317 about 15 minutes outside of the town of Robertson lies Esona Boutique winery, surrounded by beautiful vineyards and overlooking the Breede River – a unique and exceptionally creative winery.

Tastings are done either on the deck or inside in the ‘Kuip’ which is old underground tanks that they have converted into rooms adorned with beautiful art and are beautifully airconditioned, a respite from the heat of summer.

We enjoyed three of the Esona wines, the Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Shiraz – each paired with different food – such as chocolate or candied fruit peel – and learnt how the pairing of the different foods really enhances or changes the wine – really an informative tasting.

They also offer music and art pairing as well – and this was certainly one of the most innovative tasting experiences that we had on our trip around the Robertson area.

Outside on the deck, you can enjoy not only the view but a variety of platters, breakfast options, freshly baked goodies and tasty treats from Caryl’s – the in house bistro.

Our ‘Shiraz’ platter served two people more than adequately and was extremely well priced at only R 85.00 – or you can create your own platter choosing from the cold meats, cheeses and other options.

Other options like salads and ciabatta rolls are available and this is certainly a great way to line the tummy if you are on the wine route the whole day too!

The store – which is also available online – sells not only the Esona wines but a variety of glasses, gift packs and vouchers – something for just about anyone – why not gift your loved ones with a voucher to select their own wines, which can then be delivered?

Well worth a stop in at Esona if you are in the Robertson area – and do enjoy that view from the deck! 🙂
