When wine routing through Stellies, do yourself a favour and pop in to visit the team from Kunjani Wines, the view from the restaurant deck is stunning, and it is here that you can unwind and relax after your drive, and soak up some great hospitality and even better wines.
Kunjani is owned and run by husband and wife Paul and Pia, who went out of their way to make us feel at home and ensure that we were comfortable and well looked after. Their story is an intriguing one – when they met neither could speak the other language very well, yet somehow they managed to make it work and their passion for life, food and wine is evident.
The restaurant area is built on the hill overlooking the surrounding hills and vineyards, and we were entertained by the three geese in the nearby pond, as well as a host of other birdlife having a busy day on the farm, while we sipped on our wines.
We were lucky enough to enjoy several of the wines as tasters while we ate, and the ‘Stolen Chicken’ rose wine was my favourite and tells the story of Pia’s son who one day came home with a chicken that he had ‘found on the side of the road’.
The label shows her son holding the chicken, and the wine was refreshing and such a beautiful colour – we even bought a few boxes to take home in the car with us it was that good!
Their Sauvignon Blanc was crisp and refreshing and even I loved the Cabernet Sauvignon (I am not a huge red wine drinker at all!)
The lunch menu was extensive and selecting was difficult, but I opted for the Marinated Octopus and Mango salad as a starter which was delicious and for mains, I selected the Line Fish, which was perfectly served with crispy skin and soft, succulent inside, paired with grilled artichoke, broccoli, and a white wine chive sauce.
My travel partner enjoyed their Springbok Carpaccio starter and The Vegetarian Tortellini greatly as well, and the portion sizes were plentiful, we did not even have space to get to the desserts!
Chef Lamek who has headed up the kitchen since the restaurant opened in 2017 does a great job of keeping the menu fresh and innovative, and his creative use of herbs and vegetables from the garden really does justice to his incredible creations.
The restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch daily and for wine tastings, every day from 10h00 – 16h00 and they are also open on public holidays.
Kunjani also has one site accommodation, great for wedding guests or weekend visitors and this would be a great place to base yourself when exploring the Stellenbosch areas and surrounding wine route.
