About 10 kilometres outside of McGregor in the Western Cape, sprawls the picturesque Lord’s Wines, home to the Oosthuizen family and some jolly great wines too.
I say sprawls, as the farm literally occupies what seems like the entire valley and the cellars and tasting buildings are vast and all-encompassing, their Tuscan style blending perfectly with the natural surroundings.
Passionate viticulturist Jacie Oosthuizen joined his love for his two favourite things – cricket and wine – back in in 2006 on their family farm and judging by all the awards their wines have won, this has certainly been a six on the scoreboard for the Oosthuizen family.
Being a huge fan of bubbles and MCC’s as a whole, I was delighted to try the Brut MCC range – not only have Brut and the Brut Rose won a host of awards, but the Brut Rose was delightfully refreshing and has to rate as my favourite tasted in a long time.
There three-barrel Shiraz from 2016 and the 2019 Pinot Noir Rose were both a hit with my travelling partner and Jacques Oosthuizen (son of Jacie) who took us on a full cellar tour followed by the tasting was fun and engaging, as well as really informative and we really enjoyed tasting their limited, yet specialised one-of-a-kind wines.
Lord’s Wines also host events in their bespoke 150 seater venue which was completed in late 2018 and lends itself perfectly to the surrounding landscape, huge glass doors open towards the valley and I think if I were ever to get married, it would have to be without a doubt in this beautiful space.
The beautiful gardens, complete with dam and a family of blue cranes in situ, make the perfect outdoor area to watch the sunset, sip on tasty wines and spend time with friends and family.
You can even stay on-site for the weekend as Lord’s Wines boasts 2 elegantly decorated, ground-floor apartments. Both apartments are furnished with a queen-size bed that can be converted to 2 single beds on request and an en-suite bathroom with a shower, as well as basic self-catering and braai facilities.
Lord’s Wines are well priced – ranging from R 95 – R 300 per bottle. They ship worldwide and are stocked at select boutique wine stores countrywide. Keep an eye out for Lord’s Wines and do make sure to try a bottle of that Brut Rose MCC 😉
