Grei Restaurant at the Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa has been selected for 50 Best Discovery by The World’s 50 Best as announced on 26 November.
Grei joins other top South African Restaurants such as Restaurant Mosaic at The Orient, The Restaurant at Waterkloof, FYN and La Colombe on the coveted list. 50 Best Discovery gives discerning diners and drinkers the chance to explore restaurants and bars that have received votes from 50 Best experts across the world, featuring more than 1,600 reviews of venues in 75 countries.
The library combines destinations from The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, The World’s 50 Best Bars, Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants, Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants and Asia’s 50 Best Bars rankings and other far-flung locales to comprise a diverse and tempting range of restaurants and bars, empirically recommended by its Academy.
This 1,700-strong Academy comprises the world’s leading food and drink writers, chefs, restaurateurs and bar owners, global gastronomes and regional cuisine specialists and this is a wonderful accolade for Grei Restaurant and the team.
Grei opened their doors at the Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa on 19 April 2018. Their journey since then included a World Travel Awards nomination as the World’s Leading Fine Dining Hotel Restaurant 2018 and again in 2019 as well as rave reviews from both local and international guests.
The Grei team works with the Saxon’s Organic Herb and Vegetable Garden, Sarapana, and its produce, taking inspiration from the organic and heirloom vegetables, and later looking to the proteins.
Appropriately, Grei’s menu features the smell and flavour of herbs running through it. Dishes feature unusual pairings and natural, succulent flavours. Grei’s six-course menu is paired with a combination of international and local wines – with a non-alcoholic pairing option as well as vegetarian- and pescatarian-suited menus available to guests.
Chef Candice brings elements of the unusual to Grei’s dining experience – from the spelling of the restaurant’s name, the menu layout all the way through to the paired ingredients in the dishes.
