Kicking off the annual events season in Cape Town is the not to be missed running of the 159th Queen’s Plate and fourth year of the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Racing Festival – taking place at Kenilworth Racecourse on the 10th and 11th of January 2020.
This prestigious event draws celebs, personalities, horse enthusiasts and racegoers from around South Africa to its highly prestigious tents and gardens every year.
From the general access Style Village ticket to the stylish Stud Club, the comfort of the Kenilworth Building to private suites, there is an area tailor-made to suit everyone’s needs and I am excited to be spending my day in the LQP Garden Party area, and of course, sipping on delicious L’Ormarins bubbly!
The event is known for its strict dress code and both Ladies and Gentlemen are required to dress in a manner appropriate to a smart occasion adhering to the dress code of blue and white. Outfits should be elegant and ladies are encouraged to wear a hat or fascinator. There is even a best dressed and best hat competition on both days, with some fabulous prizes up for grabs.
Gentlemen are required to wear jackets and ties, cravats or a smart, open neck shirt and trousers. Linen suits and a waistcoat with an archetypal Panama can also be worn. No jeans, shorts, sleeveless shirts, open shoes or fancy dress is permitted.
The very first race was run in 1861 with a prize of five hundred sovereigns and a silver plate donated by Queen Victoria, the Queen’s Plate has seen one hundred and fifty-eight winners to date.
