Cavalli Estate in the Stellenbosch Winelands is a versatile lifestyle destination where food, wine and art are undoubtedly the centrepiece.
This venue plays host to the Cavalli Gallery which will be home to the stunning collection from artist Justin Southey titled ‘Do Not Go Gentle In To That Goodnight’ which will be on display from Sunday, 24 November 2019 to Sunday, 23 February 2020, between 16h00 and 18h00.
Justin Southey’s practise explores notions of landscapes and fantastical worlds that serve as metaphors for more unquantifiable emotional and spiritual spaces.
Acting like ephemeral mirages, the artist’s ambition is to explore and capture the intertwining and transcendent quality of the unseen. Capturing momentary feelings in a visual form, these investigations are both deeply personal and also often made in response to his immediate environment.
Southey’s presentation of work at Cavalli Gallery is loosely arranged around the poetic work by Dylan Thomas. This body of work visually explores the struggle associated with change and the refrain “rage against the dying of the light” seems to reverberate the poet’s urgent unction.
Similarly, Southey’s emotional landscapes seem to echo the vibrancy and tenor, with bold swathes of colour, texture and exuberant mark-making. There is a push and pull in the viewer’s experience, directing the eye and stimulating the senses.
