The Pantry Market at Keyes is, where possible, a plastic-free zone, and visitors can bring their own baskets to fill with everything and anything needed for a wholesome, healthy home pantry. Think locally harvested honey, delicious cheeses, artisanal bread, Italian-style charcuterie, fresh organic produce, deli-style dips, salads and snacks, Arabic pies, whole grains, decadent pastries, fresh-cut flowers and more.

As usual, visitors will be able to drop off their eco-bricks at the market, as well as empty 2-litre bottles for other visitors to fill. The bricks will be collected by ADVA, an NGO that uses eco-bricks to build benches for schools in disadvantaged areas.

Chocolate, coffee and champagne will be served at Afrikoa Café, and breakfast and lunch will be available from the several Keyes Art Mile restaurants, including Momo Kuro, BGR, MIX at MESH Club and Marble.

Insects may not be most people’s hors d’oeuvre of choice just yet, but they are becoming an increasingly popular delicacy among the world’s eco-warriors. Humans have in fact harvested the eggs, larvae, pupae and adults of various insects for thousands of years.

These days, with the rise in global warming, declining biodiversity, and meat farming releasing thousands of tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, edible insects are proving an environmentally sound alternative to meat-eating.

To share more insight on the topic, Keyes Art Mile has invited Joanne Techow, zoologist and owner of the edible insect business, Ensekta, to host this month’s free Pantry Market talk.

The Pantry Market takes place on the last Saturday of every month in and around the Trumpet Building on Keyes – 21 Keyes Avenue, Rosebank, Johannesburg.

The August edition is on Saturday 31 August, from 9am-2pm and is free to the public.
