The acclaimed, award-winning South African production of the musical The Color Purple will return to The Nelson Mandela Theatre stage at Joburg Theatre in Johannesburg for an unprecedented third season from April 2nd to 12th 2020.
Casting has been completed and Joburg Theatre and executive producer Bernard Jay are delighted to announce the company for the 2020 season, in alphabetical order: Lebo Borole, Lerato Gwebu, Nolo Harmony, Didintle Khunou (as Celie), Sebe Leotlela (as Nettie), Dolly Louw, Andile Magxaki, Yamikani Mahaka-Phiri (as Harpo), Venolia Manale, Phumi Mncayi, Neo Motaung (as Sofia), Tshepo Ncokoane, Zamah Sine Ngubane, Terrence Ngwila, Thokozani Nzima (as Mister), Funeka Peppeta, Senzesihle Radebe, Lelo Ramasimong (as Shug Avery), Musanete Sakupwanya, Zolani Shangase, Ayanda Sibisi and Lebo Toko.
The production is directed by Janice Honeyman, with musical direction by Dale-Ray Scheepers, choreography by Oscar Buthelezi, production design by Sarah Roberts, lighting design by Mannie Manim and sound design by Richard Smith.
The musical The Color Purple, based on the novel written by Alice Walker and the Warner Bros/Amblin Entertainment motion picture, has a book by Marsha Norman and music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray.
Renowned director Janice Honeyman has received high praise for her production since it’s South African premiere took place at Joburg Theatre on February 4th 2018. The Color Purple won seven awards at the recent Naledi Theatre Awards celebration.
The South African production will travel to Shanghai and other cities in Asia from June 2020.
