Just in time to celebrate Women’s Month – the Southern Sun Hotel at Silverstar have just announced a brand new GM – Izelle Verster.
I got to find out a bit more about this bubbly lady…
Describe your day-to-day role?
I oversee the efficiencies and operations of the hotel. My role entails a lot of personal interaction with guests, suppliers and staff.
What is the most challenging aspect of your position?
My role often requires me to be firm and strict. I have made it a point to form strong relationships with my team members, which makes it a bit easier to provide honest constructive feedback.
What is the most rewarding part of what you do?
I get exposed to different leaders of the hospitality industry. It is always a pleasure to have the opportunity to learn from another person, it only helps me grow as an individual.
How do you strive for the elusive work-life balance?
It is definitely possible to have it all! A woman can have a successful career, and have a healthy personal life at the same time. It is all about prioritising and making sure that you give enough time to both aspects in life.
Most memorable moment during your time working at Silverstar?
Silverstar has provided me with the opportunity for phenomenal growth. I studied at the University of Johannesburg and completed my work-integrated learnership at Silverstar Hotel. From there, I was employed permanently as a supervisor, later on promoted to a manager and this year I am proud to hold the title Hotel Manager. I hold all of the opportunities I have had dear to my heart.
Who would you say has been most influential during your career?
Throughout my years at Silverstar Hotel, I have had the pleasure of working with Dudu Hlabangani. She is a great mentor and friend.
Share your biggest epiphanies: the moments of life-defining change that shaped you into the person you are today?
I realised that your age, background etc. does not matter. If you work hard, then you will reap the benefits.
Will you share your life philosophy? How did you develop your philosophy? Where does it come from?
Stay positive and humble. I also believe you should never go to sleep when you are angry – this has taught me the importance of forgiveness and how precious life really is.
If you could give young people considering a career in the casino industry one piece of advice, what would it be?
Work hard and appreciate what you have. Make sure that you practise grit on the path that you choose for yourself, then everything will fall into place.
