Deeply invested in providing solutions to chefs, Unilever Food Solutions turned their sights and support to those for whom a nutritious daily meal is not a given on World Food Day, 16 October.

Putting their weight behind the #ShareAMealSA campaign with KNORR South Africa and FoodForward SA, a national non-profit organisation that distributes food to hundreds of verified beneficiary organisations throughout South Africa, Unilever Food Solutions were privileged to show their support through their spirit of volunteerism and the donation of a chest freezer.

Ambassadors of the KNORR brand, Unilever Food Solutions’ chefs spent the day serving over 200 nutritious and delicious meals to children at the Pauline Podbrey Foundation in Khayelitsha Cape Town, a beneficiary of FoodForward SA. The Pauline Podbrey Foundation was established in 2009 and offers after school educational support and sports activities to children from the local community and provides them with a daily meal – sometimes their only meal of the day.

The event in Khayelitsha was held to mark the significance of World Food Day and KNORR’s commitment to donate one real meal through FoodForward SA for every facebook post or tweet of #ShareAMealSA. The campaign was part of a global movement enabling people across the world to help create a brighter future where nutritious food is more accessible on a daily basis.

Says Managing Director of Unilever Food Solutions SA, Remco Bol, “We were truly concerned to find out that an organisation that does as much good as the Pauline Podrey Foundation has no way to store the ingredients that go into the meals they serve to the children every day. We are humbled by the exceptional work done by the Foundation and it was our privilege to be able to contribute in a small, but hopefully impactful way, through the donation of a chest freezer on World Food Day.”

States FoodForward SA Managing Director Andy Du Plessis, “Sadly one third of food produced in South Africa gets dumped in landfills while over 14 million people go hungry.” Bol adds, “Food waste is a huge concern for the food & beverage, catering and hospitality industries, and we believe we, as one of the largest suppliers to the industry, have a role to play in assisting chefs to become more aware of the problem and to find sustainable solutions.”
