If, like me – you love discovering the latest hot spots in and around Jozi – then whatever you do – make sure that Saigon Suzy is on your list. All “Asian themed jokes and TWAR’s” aside – Saigon Suzy is totally retro cool. This is your go to authentic Asian BBQ and rock ‘n roll bar that incorporates a variety of cooking methods and cultures, too.
The huge glass windows looking out on to Jan Smuts avenue literally beckon you in – and the light and activity is enough to make anyone driving past turn their car around and stop in to check it out.
Composed of a variety of different areas – the interlinking passageways had me intrigued. I love to feel like I am on a journey no matter where I go and that Suzy does indeed. Also the super cool wall art will have you amazed. The main area (known as the Market) is bustling and the open kitchen provides its own entertainment as the chefs weave and bob as they create the delicious foodie joys – more on those later.
Head up the lit up stairway to the left and you are on/in a whole new level. These are where the cool karaoke pods are located – book them out for a party – complete with props, drinks cabinet, mics and lumo lighting – what could be better!? Apparently the music play lists have been curated by the pro’s (whomever those may be) and are set to impress. The doors have a sort of porthole window – good for spying on the neighbours lol!
Next stop – the Cherry Blossom Garden – best for sun downers, smokers and fresh air enthusiasts. I loved it!
Now back to the food – we are talking street food here – so think China, Vietnam, South Korea and Japan. Nosh down on yummy bao, spring rolls, dim sum, ramen, miso and the like.
I can certainly assure you that this will be the must visit place for the end of year season in Jozi – and if like me you are here over December, then I think Suzy will be seeing us quite frequently!
