The Maslow, one of the most well known urban hotels in Joburg is putting a new spin on socialising on Sundays.
Starting in July (this Sunday the 30th actually) and continuing until December 2017, the last Sunday of every month will be devoted to events designed to entertain and enchant guests.
Said Maslow General Manager Ashwin Jose: “We boast the most beautiful, peaceful garden sanctuary – literally meters away from the hustle and bustle of South Africa’s busiest business heart, Sandton.
“We want to show off these gardens, our restaurant and bar, and our well appointed facilities to more than our business guests – who have already given us the thumbs up for our amenities and service.”
To kick off Social Sundays on July 30th, award winning executive chef Garth Johnson meticulously planned a winter menu. Maslow GM, Jose said: “This year, 2017, is the year the upmarket Lacuna Bistro is established as a personality, making it a brand that is a destination and more than just a restaurant whose home is The Maslow.”
The carefully thought through winter menu was designed after much research into what guests have preferred in previous years. The menu was then pared down, while still offering specials. Jose said: “Specials at The Maslow are reliant on the best produce our suppliers have. If, for example, our chefs are offered an especially excellent cut of Wagyu beef, then that becomes the special dish of the day.”
The 2017 winter menu has Spanish undertones. The signature dish on the winter menu, a Mexican braised beef shin, started out as a Mexican version of oxtail. Said outgoing Chef Garth: “There is a sensual balance of spices and tomato and red pepper as the base, with cocoa powder added for richness and depth of flavour. The cocoa adds no sweetness, just amazing body.
“I’ve used no alcohol, and replaced oxtail with beef shin off the bone because it has a delicious glutinous, sinewy feel. It is the perfect winter dish.”
Continuing the Hispanic theme, Tostadas are on the starter menu, their crispy round base covered with poached Vannamei prawns.
The dessert menu is designed to titillate taste buds while delighting the eye. The espresso chocolate parfait is a take on the famous chocolate balls from Ferrero Rocher: Koeksuster nuggets (for local flair) enrobed in chocolate then rolled in hazelnut chips.
Guests will be welcomed with the Maslow’s signature winter drink; warm brandy infused with star anise and cinnamon.
Said Jose: “Its winter and so we designed our Maslow Toddy to exude the heady scents of Christmas.”
Guests who come to sample the new four-course winter menu in the Lacuna Bistro will be treated to live entertainment in the form of a three-piece jazz band.
For the rest of 2017, guests can expect a Maslow Movie Sunday and an Umai Sushi Sunday that will celebrate the Japanese Umai concept (the so called “warmer side” of sushi). Expect a garden party in Spring, a pool party in October and Sundays filled with festive cheer as the year heads towards Christmas.
