Hello. Yes, you! Ever heard of First Thursdays? It’s free…
There you go 😉 This event, which takes place on the first Thursday of every month, is possibly the very best way to discover Joburg in all its arty farty cultural joy!
So this is what it’s all about – select galleries, pubs and restaurants stay open later than usual, so that participants can explore their city per foot, stopping at one place, and another and another to get their culture on.
Not sure where to start? Here you go:
Hello there Braamfontein!
DYK, Braam was one of the very first places that First Thursday was held after some clever sod brought the concept up from Cape Town.
While there are only a few galleries on this tour – example the Kalashnikovv Gallery and Stevenson Gallery, there’s more to see on the culture side. Why not enjoy a live Jazz show at the Orbit? Maybe get a drink and some yummy nosh at Kitcheners or my fave – Neighbourgoods Market?
Start off at the Living Room, get your map and plot out your route! Stop by Goethe on Main or Hazard gallery for your arty fix or why not head to the Bioscope Independent Cinema to catch a film? Or hop over to the POPArt Theatre for a good show, before grabbing a drink and a meal at Lenin’s Vodka Bar or the Che Argentine Grill.
Too beautiful at night – Rosebank
This are is home to loads of galleries such as the Goodman Gallery (open since 1966!), Everard Read, Gallery MOMO, David Krut Projects and the Keyes Art Mile which also plays home to loads of restaurants and dining spots, including the raved about Milk Bar, and of course one of my favourites, Marble!
