Awhooohooo The Empty Shop is on target to hit is clothing donation goal. Lekker.

Last year, it set a world record for the most clothing ever donated and this year it looks on track to scale new heights and once again make the record books.

The award-winning Empty Shop – which returned for a third year to Sandton City on Saturday, October 29 – has collected over three tons of clothing in the 20 days it has been running.

Says Sandton City General Manager Julie Hillary: “We have been delighted by the generosity of Gauteng residents who have been dropping off their clothes, shoes and other items on a daily basis.

“But if we are to break last year’s record of four tons we are going to need a lot more people to donate before the Empty Shop closes its doors on Sunday, 20 November,” adds Hillary.

Taking place in the Checkers Court, The Empty Shop gives shoppers the opportunity to donate clothing, as well as accessories, children’s books, games and toys, in good condition, to a worthy cause.

So far, local celebrities such as actress Chantal Stanfield, Jen Su and Peta Eggierth-Symes have all heeded the call to donate, as has Sandton City tenant Europa Art, which generously donated 10 pairs of new, designer shoes.

The Empty Shop in Sandton City, a partnership with McCann Johannesburg, has collected 9,3 tons of clothing to date and in 2014 set a world record (four tons) for the highest amount of clothing donated. Last year, more than five tons of clothing donations were received, again setting a new world record.

All proceeds from The Empty Shop will be donated to HospiceWits, which provides quality palliative care and support to communities in Johannesburg and Soweto.

“By partnering with initiatives such as The Empty Shop, HospiceWits is able to generate funds through the sales of donated items in our charity stores. Every item donated ensures that we never have to turn a patient away for financial reasons,” says Joy Ruwodo, Marketing Manager at HospiceWits.

The Empty Shop is open during Sandton City’s trading hours from Monday to Saturday 09h00 – 20h00 and Sunday 09h00 – 18h00. The Empty Shop will close at 18h00 on Sunday, November 20.
