Wow, once again Joburg Theatre have pulled out all stops with its latest show Sister Act, based on the movie of the same name featuring Whoopi Goldberg, and made it one of the biggest hits this year!

The cast were en pointe and the show as smooth and slick as any international show I have seen. The set design was outstanding, clever moving stage pieces and lighting made this a jaw dropping musical masterpiece, one that I would certainly watch again.

New local talent Candida Mosoma brought a new light to the character of Deloris van Cartier, an aspiring singer, determined to take herself to the top of the music industry. Totally by accident she witnesses her boyfriend, gangster Curtis, killing one of his gang members and next thing she knows she is running for her life.

Police place Deloris in witness protection at the local church, under the stern eye of Mother Superior, played by industry legend Kate Normington, and the brash and brazen Deloris battles with all the strict rules placed upon her. Suddenly she finds herself in charge of the choir, and the nuns who are totally tone deaf, thrive under Deloris’s tutelage and all of a sudden the feisty Deloris finds herself in her element, putting on a show every Sunday that has the church packed to the rafters.

Of course it doesn’t take long before Curtis and his thugs recognise Deloris, and a shoot out ensues at the church, with the wily nuns outwitting the “baddies” – and suddenly Deloris realises that without her “sisters” her life is bland and boring.

The show finale is totally spectacular, and this feel good show will have you alternating between hysterical laughter and tears of joy. Not to be missed 10 out of 10.
